Description

I felt like this should have been good with a thin consistency, 30g carbs and no-need for water…however the taste was very synthetic, like cough mixture (and not in a good way). I really struggled to finish this gel – and have heard that the caffeinated version is even worse. These gels seem to be like marmite, you either love or hate them. I wasn’t a fan but I know lots of runners find these easy to take and tolerate during their races. One benefit to these gels is that they are very widely available and come in a range of flavours. They’re low in sodium so would benefit to be taken with an electrolyte drink and/or salt pill for salty sweaters! Since developing their first isotonic energy gel, Science in Sport have continued to develop numerous gels in different flavours and different concentrations of carbohydrate, including their recently optimised high-carbohydrate (40g per gel!) Beta Fuel range.

SiS is lighter and more watery, making it a refreshing fuel for hot summer adventures and workouts. That being said, some athletes prefer to use a food, such as dates, instead of gels. How do you use running gels? Energy gels are effectively concentrated energy drinks. Therefore they need to be used diluted with some plain water. (The body needs water to digest carbohydrate). Otherwise, you may find yourself becoming dehydrated. Exceptions are Isotonic gels that are less concentrated but also provide less energy. Gels are best used just before you start running or during longer runs to ensure your body has enough carbs to fuel your exercise. How often should you use running gels? Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a fitness enthusiast, our energy gels are the perfect companion to fuel your body and maximise your performance.

Ingredients: Brown rice syrup, fruit juice concentrate, maple syrup, water, elderflower extract, pink Himalayan salt. Many runners struggle with energy gels, so it’s important to train with them. We spoke to David Dunne, a performance nutritionist and the co-founder of tailored sports nutrition app Hexis, about sports supplements. He talked us through the best approach to training your gut to handle energy gels. There are numerous energy gels on the market these days, and the choice can be bewildering. The SiS Go Isotonic Gels are designed to combine carbohydrate and water in a specific ratio (22g of carb in a 60ml gel), so you don't need to drink from your bottle to help swallow the gel. More importantly, say SIS, this mix of carb and fluid makes Go Isotonic gels more effective as a source of energy. Science in Sport (SiS) is a British company that's been in the sports nutrition business for over two decades, with a large range of products for cyclists and other athletes. The flagship Go Isotonic Energy Gel is available in various flavours, including the new pink grapefruit flavour, and the pineapple flavour tested here. These gels slip down easily and provide a good mix of fluid and carbohydrate to keep you going — and they taste good too. Science in Sport (SiS) has an energy gel that is meant to be consumed without water. This can be helpful if water stops don’t line up with when you take your fuel. Most gels require water to be consumed at the same time to help with absorption,” says Amy Goblirsh, dietitian for runners.

The Best Running Gels And How To Use Them In Your Training

I remember my friend Anna giving me a bar of Kendall Mint Cake on my Duke of Edinburgh expedition and it felt like life-giving nectar. Maybe this Citrus & Mint gel would do the same given at the end of the race? The thin textured gel is certainly minty, infact it uses peppermint extract to help promote natural digestion. I didn’t mind it, but found it a little toothpasty. The refreshing taste would make a nice change towards the end of a race but I’m not sure I could use it as my only gel flavour. There is also a caffeine option. Maurten energy gels are unflavored, so they’re a great choice for athletes who are sensitive to the strong, sweet flavors of other gels. Each SiS Go gel comes in a 60 ml sachet and provides the following. (Note: not a big bang for the volume.) Gels may also include caffeine, which has been shown to improve exercise performance, as well as branched-chain amino acids, which can help relieve muscle soreness ( 2, 3).

It depends if you are also taking on energy drinks. If you get 40grams of carbohydrate from a 500ml energy drink, one additional energy gel of 25 grams will take you up to the 70g target. Most races provide water, so it is safer to rely on your own gels rather than hope what’s offered at a race suits your needs.Caffeine content. Caffeine may help boost performance. However, some people are more sensitive to its effects, and too much caffeine may cause unwanted side effects. To balance your caffeine intake, you may want to alternate between caffeinated and non-caffeinated gels or skip the caffeine altogether ( 6, 7).
